Mahjong 101

An introduction to the game.

One introduction · 60–90 minutes

Meet the tiles, explore the card, and get a feel for how American Mahjong is played. This single 60–90-minute session is a welcoming first look and works well for larger groups.

A chance to try the game and see what you think. For more instruction and practice, explore the Beginner Series.

Learn to play, together

Three sessions · One small group

A little more time. A lot more confidence.

Build your game over three sessions with the same small group. Step-by-step instruction, plenty of practice, and individual attention give you time to connect the dots.

For complete beginners and anyone who has tried an introductory lesson and wants to keep learning.

One registration includes all three sessions.
You can start here. Mahjong 101 is not a prerequisite.

  1. Session 1

    Foundations

For complete beginners. Identify the tiles, understand the goal of the game, begin reading the NMJL card, and practice setting up, dealing, and the Charleston.

  2. Session 2

    Making Decisions

Review the foundations, practice choosing a hand, calling tiles, making exposures, and using jokers. Apply the rules through guided play with time for questions.

  3. Session 3

    Putting It Together

Put it together through complete games with instructor support. Practice making decisions, recognizing mistakes, and managing the flow of play more independently.

Tiles, racks, mats, and current NMJL cards provided for use during lessons.

How is Mahjong 101 different from the series?

Mahjong 101 is a single 60–90-minute introduction that can accommodate a larger group. The Beginner Series is a separate, three-session learning experience with the same small group, more practice, and individual attention.

Do I need to take Mahjong 101 first?

No. The Beginner Series starts with the foundations and welcomes complete beginners. If you have already attended an introduction, you are welcome too. Mahjong 101 does not replace the first series session.

Do I need to bring a group of four?

No. You can join a scheduled group series on your own or with a friend. If you already have a group, ask us about a private lesson.

When are lessons offered, and how do I book?

Lessons and series are offered on selected dates. October introductory lessons reserve through Eventbrite, with a required $5 server gratuity. Paid lessons and series use secure checkout when dates are open. One Beginner Series registration covers all three sessions. All dates, location, pricing, and the missed-session policy will be shared before registration opens. If no dates are listed, get in touch about the next group.
